<h3><strong>As nutrition declines, supplements help fill the gap.</strong></h3>
<p>A carrot is a carrot, right?  Well, not always.  Today’s carrot looks the part of a winner.  It’s larger and more pest resistant than Grandma’s garden variety, but it doesn’t compare nutritionally to the one she added to her Sunday roast beef years ago.</p>
<p>Over the past 50 years, agriculture technology expanded crop yields like never before and allowed farmers to produce two or three times more fruits, vegetables and grains.  But in the rush to feed the world, modern farming methods are depleting the nutrient content of the soil.  With each planting of a fast-growing, pest-resistant hybrid crop, carrots have grown inferior.</p>
<p>And it’s not just carrots’ nutritionals that are suffering.</p>
<p><strong>Nutritional Inflation</strong></p>
<p>Brian Halweil, who authored a nutritional report for The Organic Center and is food expert at Worldwatch Institute, likens this nutritional decline in fruits and vegetables to monetary inflation.  “We have more food, but it’s worth less in terms of nutritional value,” he says.</p>
<p>Donald Davis and a team of University of Texas at Austin researchers from the department of chemistry and biochemistry studied U.S. Department of Agriculture data from 1950 and 1999.  They found “reliable declines” in the amount of protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin or vitamin B2, and vitamin C in 43 different vegetables and fruits.</p>
<p>Davis reported to the <em>Journal of the American College of Nutrition</em> in 2004, “Efforts to breed new varieties of crops that produce greater yield, pest resistance and climate adaptability have allowed crops to grow bigger and more rapidly, but their ability to manufacture or uptake nutrients has not kept pace with their rapid growth.”</p>
<p>Rates of nutritional decline vary from food to food and study to study.  The Organic Consumers Association cites a Kushi Institute 1975-1997 analysis and British data analysis from 1930 to 1980 published in the <em>British Food Journal</em>, each reporting substantial nutritional decline in fruits and vegetables.  Another study concluded that the vitamin A content in oranges has fallen to a level where one needs to eat eight of them to equal one of yesteryear’s varieties.</p>
<p>“Less nutrient –dense food, coupled with poor food choices, goes a long way toward explaining today’s epidemics of obesity and diabetes,” Charles Benbrook, chief scientist for the Organic Center, told Worldwatch.org.</p>
<p>Improving soil depletion issues is the key to solving the per-serving nutritional decline of fruits, vegetables and grains.  Proponents of organic agriculture recommend forgoing pesticides and fertilizers in favor of manure, cover crops and allowing fields to lie fallow between planting cycles.  These practices improve soil quality, but they take time and cost money that savvy, health-conscious consumers don’t have.</p>
<p>Because robust root systems aggressively absorb nutrients from the soil, they produce crops with higher concentrations of nutrients and phytochemicals.  “Still No Free Lunch,” The Organic Center’s report, estimates organically grown foods may have as much as 20% higher nutritional content for some minerals and may average 30% more antioxidants than conventionally farmed foods.</p>
<p>Organics might be the nutritional solution consumers seek, but there’s more to it.  More readily available now than they were a decade ago, they remain costly.  So what is a nutrition-conscious consumer to do?</p>
<p>Gardeners might heed advice from <em>Mother Earth News</em>, which recommends planting older, lower-yielding heirloom fruit and vegetable varieties in the backyard garden, using organic growing methods and moderate amounts of slow-release fertilizers.</p>
<p>Consumers without a plot of land might switch some produce purchases to organic, especially for the environmental Working Group’s “dirty dozen.”  On the infamous list are conventionally produced peaches, apples, bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, pears, grapes, spinach, lettuce and potatoes.  These foods are notorious for pesticide and other chemical contamination, which includes known carcinogens.  Outlaying extra cash for organics in this case is win/win – reducing chemical contamination and boosting per-serving nutrition levels.</p>
<p><strong>Nutritional Support Beyond Food</strong></p>
<p>Today’s complex nutritional landscape is increasingly difficult for consumers to navigate, made worse by news that nutrients in whole foods are diminishing.  But consumer awareness is growing, linking proper nutrition to health, weight loss and even living longer and better.  How, then, can consumers optimize their health if today’s “carrot” doesn’t supply the nutrients they need?</p>
<p>“Often, the doses of those nutrients needed for a therapeutic effect are simply way more than are going to be available in the average diet, even a diet constructed according to the best longevity principles,” Jonny Bowden, Ph.D. writes in his best-selling book <em>The Most Effective Ways to Live Longer</em>.</p>
<p>Over-the-counter <a title="Vi-Shape Nutritional Shake Mix – the Core of the Body By Vi Challenge" href="http://my-body-by-vi.com/visalus-body-by-vi-90-day-challenge/vi-shape-nutritional-shake-mix/" target="_blank">nutritional supplements</a> fill dietary gaps, and Bowden likes to think of them as a technology – a kind of modern-day delivery system for nutrients we can’t get enough of otherwise.  Without them, the immune system malfunctions.  Bacteria and viruses more easily invade the body, the susceptibility to secondary infection increases and so too does recovery time.</p>
<p>The World Health Organization Center for Nutritional Immunology studied older adults in a double-blind controlled study to find that after 12 months of basic multivitamin and mineral supplementation, the supplemental group reported half as many sick days and their immune function improved.</p>
<p>Maintaining proper nutrient levels in the body is the key to healthy living at all ages, but it is particularly important for dieters limiting carbohydrates and other foods in an effort to lose weight.  And it might them more successful, as well.</p>
<p>The Mayo Clinic recommends nutritional supplements for anyone with a substandard diet, those  who consume less than 1,600 daily calories, as well as vegans and vegetarians.  People with disorders or past surgeries of the digestive tract and women who experience heavy menstrual bleeding, are pregnant, trying to conceive, breast-feeding or or are postmenopausal should also use nutritional supplements.</p>

<p>“Many people who take vitamins on a regular basis don’t get sick very often.  Whether that’s because they’re healthier to begin with or because the vitamins in some way support their immune system is an open question,” Bowden writes.  “Vitamins aren’t the only thing that can keep you healthy, but they may help.”</p>

<p><strong>Childhood Obesity:  Causing Bodily Harm</strong></p>
<p>Find out what’s weighing on future generations – <em>literally</em> – and how you can help prevent it.</p>
<p>As adults, it’s commonplace to monitor weight fluctuations and how our clothes fit.  But what about our children?  Is anyone making sure their clothes no longer fit because they’re getting taller – as opposed to just bigger?  Just as the number of overweight and obese adults has increased in this country, so has the rate of childhood obesity.</p>
<p>According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years.  Today nearly one in three American children is overweight or obese.  In African-American and Hispanic communities the number is even higher – at almost 40%.  Experts are calling childhood obesity an epidemic.</p>
<p>Just as obesity and excess weight cause health consequences for adults, obese kids pay a heavy health price.  Obese youths are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure.  The CDC reported that in one sample of obese 5- to 17-year-olds, a staggering 70% had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease.  What’s more, obese adolescents are more likely to be prediabetic and have greater risk for joint problems and sleep apnea.  One recent study suggests that obesity, sleep apnea and behavior and learning difficulties can actually interact with one another to worsen their effects on children.</p>
<p>Health hazards aside, everyone knows kids can be cruel.  With bullying now at an all-time high, obese children are prime targets.  At an age when fitting in can be <em>everything</em>, the stigma of simply being bigger than everyone else can be crippling to a child.</p>
<p><strong>A Lifestyle Issue</strong></p>
<p>So how did childhood obesity become an epidemic in this country?  The answer isn’t simple.  A generation ago our lifestyles were different.  Kids walked to and from school, ran around at recess, took gym class and played outdoors after school.  They ate reasonable portions of home-cooked meals.  On average, they ate one snack between meals per day, and fast food was a rare treat.</p>
<p>Contrast that with the habits of today’s youth.  Think about it:  How do your kids start their days?  Sugary cereal?  Pastry?  No breakfast at all?  Maybe they ride their bikes to school, but most ride buses.  Many gym classes have fallen victim to school budget cuts, and after-school activities are often sedentary.  Today’s kids, ages 8  to 18, spend an average on 7.5 hours a day using some form of entertainment media – TV, computers, video games, cell phones, movies and so on.  Between meal snacks are a way of life, trending towards three a day.  Eating out, including fast food, has become commonplace.  And portion sizes have exploded.  They’re now up to five times larger than in years past.  In the mid-1970s the average sugar-sweetened beverage was 13.6 ounces.  Today it is common for kids to consume a 20-ounce sugar-filled drink and 240 extra calories.  As a society, people today eat about 30% more calories than we did 40 years ago, including 56% more fats and 14% more sugars.</p>
<p>Childhood obesity is a frustrating problem, but it is ours to control.  It has gained the attention of influential foodies, physicians, and first lady Michelle Obama.  She launched a comprehensive initiative called <em>Let’s Move!</em> that’s dedicated to solving the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.  As part of the effort, President Barack Obama established the Task Force on Childhood Obesity, which is charged with developing an interagency plan to reduce the rate of childhood obesity to just 5% by 2030.  The task force issued its first report in February 2011, making far-reaching recommendations for parents, schools, physicians and even government agencies.</p>
<p><strong>Fighting Fat</strong></p>
<p>LetsMove.gov lists many easy, inexpensive actions you can take in your own home, starting today.  Here are just a few:</p>
<ul>
<li>Make sure your family eats a <a title="What the Heck Are You Eating? Is That Breakfast Killing You Slowly?" href="http://my-body-by-vi.com/healthy-weight-loss-tips/what-the-heck-are-you-eating-is-that-breakfast-killing-you-slowly/" target="_blank">healthy breakfast</a> every day.  In addition to being a good way to start a day, a nutritious breakfast can help prevent overeating and snacking later in the day.</li>
<li>Later in the day, replace sodas with water or 100% fruit juice.</li>
<li>Learn about portion sizes.  Many should be smaller than you think.  For example, provide portions equal to the size of the back of a fist – a child’s fist for a child’s portion.  Start off serving a small portion.  Kids can have seconds if they are still hungry.</li>
<li>Eat as a family whenever possible, and remember that vegetables and fruits are your meal –planning friends.  Green should be a regular color on everyone’s plate.</li>
<li>Take your time as you eat.  It takes about 20 minutes for your body to signal your brain that you’re full.</li>
</ul>
<p>Celebrities and high-profile personalities are also getting into the act.  The American Heart Association joined forces with the William J. Clinton Foundation in 2005 to form the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.  Its aggressive goal is to empower kids nationwide to make healthy lifestyle choices.  The association teamed up with television personality and author Rachael Ray and her Yum-O! organization to provide recipes appropriate for school settings that are nutritious and delicious.  What child wouldn’t like to see Rachael’s  Mexi-Mac and Cheese in the school cafeteria?</p>
<p>Ideas That Work</p>
<p>School cafeterias have always faced budget challenges, as well as rooms full of picky eaters in a hurry.  But today they’re getting creative, figuring out surprising ways to get kids to eat more nutritiously.  Who knew that naming plain old carrots “X-Ray Vision Carrots” could get preschoolers to eat almost twice the amount?  Or that placing fruit near the cash registers, where impulse purchases are often made, led kid to choosing fruit more often.  One lunchroom simply moved its salad bar from the side of the lunchroom to the middle.  The result:  an immediate increase in salad sales.  And at another school, just prominently displaying fruit in a colorful bowl increased the sale of fruit by 104%.</p>
<p>Use these suggestions to boost better nutrition at home.  After all, every chip you replace with X-Ray Vision Carrots or a Sugar-Sweet Pear means fewer empty calories and better nutrition for your family.</p>
<p>You may not be a celebrity chef, a government official or a certified nutritionist, but you can help prevent obesity in your own home.  Banish the Clean Plate Club from your home.  Select nonfood rewards to recognize your kids’ accomplishments.  It’s the small daily steps – especially those that rev up the heart rate – that will win this war against childhood obesity.</p>

<p>When I work with new ViSalus clients starting their first <a title="body by vi" href="http://budurl.com/2joinchallenge" target="_blank">Body by Vi<sup>TM</sup> Challenge</a>, I always recommend the same thing:  Don’t try to change everything, don’t start counting calories, don’t start a new exercise program – just replace two meals each day with <a title="Vi-Shape Nutritional Shake Mix – the Core of the Body By Vi Challenge" href="http://my-body-by-vi.com/visalus-body-by-vi-90-day-challenge/vi-shape-nutritional-shake-mix/" target="_blank">Vi-Shape protein shakes</a> for the first two weeks.  Just by making that one change, you will get 60 percent of your vitamins, lose weight or inches, feel better and sleep better.  Most important, you will believe in the ViSalus system and be ready to commit to other changes.  People need to trust a product.  They need to bring loyalty to a product.</p>
<p>My experience in nutrition and fitness is extensive.  I have my own independent fitness consulting business, am an elite trainer and have celebrity clients in New York City.  I was 2010 Miss Bikini America, Miss Fitness America and have appeared on the covers of five fitness magazines.  I also model for fitness magazines and write about the industry for various publications.  My clients range from teens to the elderly – people who are dealing with a wide variety of health and fitness issues, including weight loss, insecurities and life in general.  I teach how to eat properly and how to learn a healthier, balanced lifestyle.</p>
<p>In March, after researching the company and trying the products, I committed to become a Body by Vi Promoter.  First, I tested the shakes and vitamins on myself and was really excited to find that the protein shake actually tastes like a milkshake.  I’ve tried it myself as an athlete, using the shake as a muscle-recovery drink after I work out.  I’ve never seen such a change in my body.  I put on four to five pounds of lean muscle in the last couple of months.</p>
<p>My family personally struggles with obesity.  I’m very familiar with <a title="How Low Calorie and Crash Diets Can Adversely Effect Weight Loss, Causing Yo Yo Weight loss and Re-Gain" href="http://my-body-by-vi.com/healthy-weight-loss-tips/how-low-calorie-and-crash-diets-can-adversely-effect-weight-loss-and-cause-yo-yo-weight-loss-and-re-gain/" target="_blank">yo-yo dieting</a>.  Before I learned about ViSalus and the Body by Vi Challenge, I knew there had to be an easier method out there that doesn’t feel like you’re dieting, but helps you lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle.  My two sisters’ weight goes up or down 30 pounds on a yearly basis.  After I tried ViSalus, I asked them to try it.  They didn’t want to at first because they were worried the shakes would taste chalky.  I told them, “These shakes taste like milkshakes.  You don’t feel like you’re on a diet.”  They tried it and both lost a full pants size and 10 pounds in the first month.  Once I saw how easy it was for them, I knew that every consumer who struggles with weight can do it.</p>

<p><strong><em>As Americans’ dependence on fast food increases, so do our waistlines.</em></strong></p>
<p>If you’re like most Americans, you’re short on time and money.  Perhaps this is why we rely so “heavily” on fast food.  It’s so easy, convenient and cheap to pull up to a drive-through, order the “No. 1” and be on our way with a 1,500-calorie meal.</p>
<p>In the United States, fast-food restaurants are ubiquitous.  Everywhere we turn, there’s another KFC, McDonald’s or Taco Bell.  Perhaps this is why so many of us turn to them.  But studies show that eating fast food can easily put us on the “fast track” to fat.</p>
<p>The American way of life is fast-paced, making it easy to fall into the trap of eating fast food.  But have you ever stopped to think what that fast-food meal is doing to your physique and your health?</p>
<p>Statistics show that during the last 35 years, sales in the U.S. fast-food industry have grown by almost 1,000%.  In 1975, sales equaled $16.1 billion and in 2009 sales reached about $160 billion.  This growth is just as apparent in our waistlines.  Every year, Americans keep gaining weight.</p>
<p><strong>Growing Epidemic</strong></p>
<p>The U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention report that the obesity epidemic in the United States is growing at an alarming rate.  In 1990, no states had a prevalence of obesity equal to or greater than 10%.  However, by 2010, no state had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%, and 12 states had a prevalence of obesity equal to or greater than 30%.</p>
<p>Recent CDC statistics indicate that two out of three Americans – <em>some 200 million people</em> – are overweight or obese.  And one-third of American children are overweight or obese.</p>
<p>According to a CNBC special report, “One Nation, Overweight,” obesity has attacked every age group, including the very young.  Obesity rates among children have tripled from a generation ago.  One in three children in the United States is either obese or overweight and at risk of developing type 2 <a title="Diabetic Safe Weight Loss Solution ~ Body By Vi Challenge Helps Diabetics Lose Weight Fast, Easily, and Saves Them Money" href="http://my-body-by-vi.com/visalus-body-by-vi-90-day-challenge/diabetic-safe-weight-loss-solution-body-by-vi-challenge-helps-diabetics-lose-weight-fast-easily-and-saves-them-money/" target="_blank">diabetes</a> in their lifetime.</p>
<p>A study in the <em>New England Journal of Medicine</em> (March 17, 2005) concluded our nation’s youth could be the first generation <em>ever</em> to have a shorter lifespan than their parents.</p>
<p><strong>Portion Distortion</strong></p>
<p>If you watch television at all, you’ve seen the commercials – you know, the ones advertising unhealthy foods.  Whether it’s an ad for a cheesy flatbread sandwich at Taco Bell or a calorie-dense meal at McDonald’s, these commercials are designed to tempt your taste buds and cause cravings you didn’t know existed.  And they work.</p>
<p>According to the CDC, Americans are eating more calories on average than they did in the 1970s.  Between 1971 and 2000, the average man added 168 calories to his daily fare while the average woman added 335 calories a day.  What’s driving this trend?  Experts say it’s a combination of increased availability, bigger portions and more high-calorie foods – the hallmarks of fast food.</p>
<p>A May 15, 2009, ScienceNews.com article, “Super Size Diet Increases Insulin Resistance,” reports that too much fast food could put people on a fast track to diabetes.  In a study, researchers concluded that just one month on a fast-food diet was enough to alter the ability of fat cells to respond to insulin, a hallmark of type 2 diabetes.</p>
<p>In his book <em>Food Fight: The Inside Story of the Food Industry, America’s Obesity Crisis, and What We Can Do About It</em> (McGraw-Hill, 2004), Kelly Brownell, Ph.D., argues that fast food is accessible, convenient, heavily promoted, and engineered with fat and sugar to be tasty and cheap.  No wonder so many of us have fallen into the fast-food trap.</p>
<p><strong>Convenient Killer</strong></p>
<p>As the prevalence of obesity in our nation has increased, so has our dependence on fast food.  Is it a coincidence?  Or is there a cause-and-effect relationship between the two?  Many researchers believe fast food is the enemy and that convenience is killing us.</p>
<p>In a recent study, researchers Mark Pereira, Ph.D., and David Ludwig, M.D., Ph.D., showed that fast food increases the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.  Participants who consumed fast food two or more times a week gained approximately 10 more pounds and had twice as great an increase in insulin resistance than participants who consumed fast food less than once per week.</p>
<p>According to the U.S. Department of health and Human Services, being overweight or obese significantly affects the health, quality of life and life expectancy of the U.S. population.  Excess weight is a risk factor for a large number of diseases and chronic conditions.</p>
<p>Researchers now associate obesity with more chronic disorders that can worsen our quality of life, even more so than smoking or problem drinking.</p>
<p>Estimates of the number of years of life lost as a result of being overweight or obese range as high as 20 years for certain age and ethnic groups.  Health experts suggest that in terms of the physical quality of life, the effect of obesity can be the equivalent of aging as much as 30 years.</p>
<p><strong>Portion Distortion</strong></p>
<p>American fast-food establishments and restaurants have increasingly served larger portions through the years.  A typical convenience meal pack at McDonald’s includes a Quarter Pounder with Cheese (510 calories) and a large serving of French fries (500 calories) for a whopping total of 1,100 calories – and that’s not including a sugary soda or milkshake.</p>
<p>According to the U.S. Department of Health &amp; Human Services, average portion sizes have doubled and even tripled in the past 20 years.  In the 1950s, a typical fast-food hamburger weighed 1 ounce, while today it weighs 6 ounces.  The average fast-food restaurant meal nowadays contains a staggering 1,500 calories.</p>
<p>These growing portions are changing what Americans think of as a “normal” portion size.  Studies show that the more food put in front of people, the more they eat.  It’s called portion distortion.</p>
<p>“Portion distortion is a major contributor to many expanding waistlines,” the American Heart Association reports in its book American <em>Heart Association No-Fad Diet: A Personal Plan for Healthy Weight Loss</em> (Clarkson Potter, 2005).</p>

Lunch is either another Vi-Shape shake, or its your normal healthy meal.  Please see the videos and menu guide in the body By Vi Challenge members area for what constitutes a normal healthy meal.  Essentially you want to eat what you want to be satisfied, but to keep your portion sizes normal.  That means if you want pizza, eat it! But have no more than 2 slices, and have a nice salad with it. And if you want fried chicken, that can be OK too&#8230;. but don&#8217;t eat the whole bucket, and skip the fries!  The fact is, by replacing 2 other meals with the Vi-Shape shake, you don&#8217;t have to worry so much about this real meal.   Just try to keep it sensible, and skip the soda!</p>
